The highlight of the meeting was a very informative talk by Capt Ray Brice who retired after 39 years with UAL. He started as a mechanic and retired as a B-747-400 Capt. His last position was as Director of Flight Safety for UAL at its World Headquarters. For many years he was the ALPA Central air Safety Chairman. Ray discussed early days of aviation and various accidents and how they resulted in changes in aircraft design, changes in maintenance procedures, changes in crew training, etc. He covered the voluntary safety reporting programs and how important they are. He compared this to other industries that refuse to institute them (specifically hospitals) and as a result have continued mistakes and un-necessary deaths. There was a question and answer period following his talk. | ||
