| John Porter of the National Park Service led a very fine tour of the last remaining Nike site in the U.S. Sometime in 1970's the Army turned the site over to the National Park Service. Evidently it sat for awhile and some of the underground bunkers filled with water. A vounteer organization was founded and they have done a fine job of resurecting the site which includes one underground bunker w/ 6 Nike missles, an active launcher and other very interesting displays. The site is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month between 12:30 and 3:30 and it is well worth seeing. You can view their website at : http://www.atomictourist.com/nike.htm Take a look at some of our chapter members touring the Nike base in the picture gallery located in the "Photos" section. On a historical note: This was a real lesson about the cold war. Many major US companies were involved in developing the Nike program. We saw Fruehof trailors that were specially built for the missles; special tires for these trailers that were developed by US tire , etc. | ||
