Retired UAL Capt. Phil Simon showed about an hour of 35mm slides covering the various types of charts, plates, SIDS, STARS, and various publications etc. that are used in aviation.

Starting with photos of the roll up scrolls for VFR navigation that the US goverment printed and progressing through the lighted airways (beacons maintained by the lighthouse service), the AN airways, VOR airways, etc. to modern navigation methods.

It is amazing to see the variety of printed materials that are used in professional aviation, including detailed flight plans, a multitude of weather maps, oceanic route charts, HF radio net charts, special route procedures, mountain wave avoidance routes, etc. There was even a slide showing an all black chart that was printed showing the various lights that could be seen when flying a night time visual approach to the old Hong Kong airport.

Other maps used included such items as maps showing various rivers, historical maps, maps showing ski areas, indian reservations, charts giving the frequencies of commercial radio broadcast staions in various cities (for monitoring football game scores) etc.
